- Apple Computer, Inc. assigns file type and auxiliary type combinations to
- developers who wish unique file identification by directory entry. Many
- hundreds of assignments have been made since this program began in 1988,
- and
- developer cooperation is one reason the Apple II community today has an
- understandable situation instead of a mishmash of stolen or misused file
- types
- and auxiliary types. Without this cooperation, identification except by
- file
- name would not be possible.
-
- Apple makes all assignments privately, so as not to "preannounce" any
- developer's product. That means Apple relies on developers to inform Apple
- when their product is actually shipping, so the assignment can be printed
- and
- included in such products as the File Type Descriptor files with the system
- software. A notice to this effect is included with every file type
- assignment, and has been for years.
-
- However, as of this writing there are well over ONE HUNDRED assigned file
- type
- and auxiliary type combinations in Apple's database marked "private." In
- all
- such cases, Developer Support has never learned whether the product for
- which
- the assignments were made is shipping or not. In some cases, we've listed
- assignments for products we've seen advertised even though we weren't
- informed
- they were shipping -- but we don't see advertisements for all products, by
- a
- long shot.
-
- IMPORTANT:
-
- If you or your company has _ever_ received a file and auxiliary type
- assignment
- from Apple Computer, and if your files do not show up by their real "Kind"
- in
- the System 6.0 Finder, please write to DEVSUPPORT on AppleLink
- (DEVSUPPORT@applelink.apple.com on Internet) and inform us which
- assignments
- correspond to shipping products.
-
- DO NOT ASSUME DEVSUPPORT KNOWS. We most likely do -not- know your product
- is
- shipping. Even if you think you've told us, tell us again.
-
- Your notice must be recieved by November 30th, 1992, or your products'
- identification will not be included in System Software 6.0.1. This is not
- a
- statement about when 6.0.1 will ship, just about when we must update the
- databases in question.
-
- Again: Write to DEVSUPPORT and tell them your product is shipping if it is
- and
- you received a file type/auxiliary type assignment from Apple Computer.
-
