- Apple to outsell IBM, analyst says The Associated Press
-
- BOSTON
-
- Apple Computer Inc. will overtake International Business Machines in
- sales of personal computers this year, an analyst has estimated.
-
- Kimball Brown, director of PC hardware research for International
- Data Corp., a market-research firm headquartered in Framingham,
- Mass., based his estimate on the number of units shipped by each
- company during the past several years.
-
- In 1990, IBM had 12 .9 percent of the total units shipped worldwide
- compared with Apple's 7.2 percent, Brown said.
-
- By 1991, the margin had narrowed, with IBM shipping 11.3 percent of
- units to Apple's 9.7 percent. That translated to 2.9 million units
- for IBM and 2.5 million for Apple.
-
- However, in the first nine months of this year, Apple shipped 2.04
- million units, compared with IBM's 1.85 million, Brown said.
-
- "The year isn't over yet," Brown said. "The question is: Can IBM come
- back?"
-
- "But even if they did, I think Apple would still come out on top."
