- Apple itself only reimburses dealers for entire mechanisms... Not just
- pieces. This stinks because you end up buying an entire new drive for
- one little bent spring or something.
-
- When my head got damaged, I bought an old, cheap Mac 800K drive. If you
- are careful, you can open it up, pull out all the little screws, etc...
- (Don't stretch out those little springs!!!!) and remove the heads. Although
- the ROMs don't work in the newer drives, the heads sure do! You might
- need to lightly bend the flange (that moves the head back and forth as
- the spindle turns) until the heads can accurately center on- and read
- the tracks of existing disks.
-
- I performed this operation over a year ago, and my drive is still healthy.
-
- The question is: Can you use those IBM 720K heads in an Apple drive?
