- I, too, had a similar problem. Since I live in Canada and bought the
- drive in the States, warranty repair work couldn't be done here.
- After a talk with the GVP tech support, they actually suggested that I
- open it up myself instead of ship it to the States for warranty work..
- (but then, I guess the fact that I'm in Electrical Engineering helped
- matters a bit...)
-
- Anyway, the fan (in my case, anyway), was unrelated to the problem.
- Even when the fan was totally unplugged, the hard drive would
- periodically spin down and then back up. It was happening with more
- and more regularity all the time.
-
- And to make a long story short, eventually I traced the fault back to
- a couple of bad solder connections in the power supply. It was the
- connections for the jack connecting the plug going to the Amiga
- (inside the power supply...) It was hard to isolate, since I was
- still getting the voltages I needed in the drive, but the bad contact
- limited the current. Anyway, I re-soldered the joints and everything
- has been working fine (for the last couple months, anyway..) So if
- your warranty is expired, you may want to take a peek (if you are
- comfortable around electronics..) If your warranty is good though, by
- all means send it in for repair - if you get a new hard drive out of
- the deal it may be worth a bit of wait!
-
- ttyl...and good luck...Dan
