- : Well, Mr. Eggebrecht told us, that from WB 3.1 on, the Amiga's will be able
- : to do such 'easy' networking, too. I suppose this is ParNet or SerNet from
- : the 'Software Destillery', but a better/newer version. Also, i believe
- : that there is no need for a network-card on-board. But as option it would be
- : nice. Just plug in. You actually can have that for the machines with slots
- : only.
-
- The problem with ParNet and SerNet is that it takes up one port for each
- connection. I happen to have ParNet set up on my two machines, but I can't
- use my parallel printer. The advantage of a thin-wire ethernet port is that
- you can connect more than 30 (recommendations vary) machines on one network.
- An added benefit is that you can get inexpensive cabling supplies from Radio
- Shack (which is everywhere).

- Network support in the O/S should be MANDATORY. I think what you're saying
- that networking hardware should be optional. Personally, I think that
- networking hardware should be mandatory even if it is slow. Apple has the
- Amiga beat in networking because every Macintosh is shipped with hardward
- and software support for networking. There are even printers and modems
- from third parties that directly support AppleTalk. This is an advantage.
-
- : Remember, 25$ costs for simple Ethernet will expand to more than 100$ costs
- : for the end-user. 100$ for something not worth it all the time.
-
- Right now, I'd be willing to pay the $100 each for ethernet capabilities in
- my two machines. However, ethernet cards are $250 each, parallel<->ethernet
- and SCSI<->ethernet are even more expensive. Additionally, the parallel port
- adapter will take up my parallel port (Which ParNet already does), and I
- won't gain anything.
