- You are missing the point behind the reasoning for not releasing the
- information in such a 'relaxed' form. The graphics hardware is changing.
- C= is trying to move to a more device-independent and retargetable graphics
- form for the Amiga. Direct hardware banging inhibits this when it is
- sanctioned. For this reason, by not releasing the AGA register setup and
- hardware programming methods, C= is allowing the hardware to change by
- placing an insulating layer above the hardware itself.
- Note though that if you DO 'disassemble and test' as you mentioned in
- order to directly manipulate the AGA set, it is almost guaranteed your code
- WILL break in the possibly near future on other machines. This is exactly
- why C= does not wish to release the information in book form. By doing so,
- C= would liable itself to support direct hardware manipulation...and in
- doing so would prohibit smooth transitions to more advanced graphics hardware.
- Yes, such a reference manual could come with the warning that 'this will not
- work on future machines'...but the essence is that the Amiga does not need
- a base of software guaranteed to break on the next chip revision, machine
- architecture, etc...
