- Look, it's pretty darn simple. I let people use my computer system via
- modem. If they do not supply me with thier *real* name and a *voice*
- phone number where I can reach them and validate them, then they do
- *NOT* get access to *MY* system. Since my system offers free Internet
- Mail and Usenet access, I have a need to know who my users are and be
- able to contact them in case of problems.
-
- I had a couple of problems with a couple of users sending nasty mail to
- NASA and one transferring confidential company documents via the
- networks. In both cases I had Security officers from the respective
- companies call me since my system is registered with the NIC and is
- listed in the UUCP_Maps.
-
- I cooperated completely with the users full name, address and phone
- number so that these people could call them. Sorry, but when it comes
- to someone taking my computers away I'm going to do whatever is needed
- to prevent that.
-
- Caller ID just makes the process of obtaining information from your
- users easier and it keeps them honest. If a user doesn't want to
- provide this information then they will not be using any of my systems
- and I suggest that other network sysops do the same.
-
- This rediculous idea that your phone number and name isn't already in
- the hands of tons of agencies is just juvenile. People already have
- your number and BBS sysops have more business than most knowing your
- phone number.
