- ]> You don't think that calling that person back is good enough to verify?
-
- Same difference, only Caller ID is better in that regard. For instance,
- if you called my BBS and gave an out of state #, I would assign you the
- de facto template of "LD caller" which is almost as good as validated, but
- with no upload, message write, or Holodeck access. Most LD callers are just
- calling for one thing (guess what that is :-)
-
- I used to do voice validations even if the caller was LD, but it's a major
- hassle.
-
- Callback verifiers are not any better. They just verify that the user is
- calling from the number stated, but most intelligent CBVs won't call outside
- the local calling area unless you tell it to. Back to square one.
-
- Caller ID on the other hand shows the number regardless of where that person
- is calling from. No LD charges involved on my end, no hassle. Much better
- and much more reliable.
-
- Now, if one were wanting to disable thier CID outgoing, I could do two things.
- I could either not allow the connect, or create a validation template for
- such critters that offered SOME services but not all.
-
- With voice or CBV, however, it's very easy to falsify. Back to square one.

-
- See, that's where the problem is, apparently. The people providing free
- services for others deserve a few rights, too, and one of those is to know
- who they are dealing with. I DO consider it a matter of trust. When you
- log on to my system as a new user, you are told UP FRONT that I consider it
- extremely bad manners to falsify info like that, AND make it CRYSTAL CLEAR
- that I have NO intention of using the information for any manner of profit
- making scam. The ONLY thing that will ever cause me to pop out privileged
- information like that is the actual use of my system in the carrying out of
- a crime -- I consider them fair game in a situation like that, and I hope
- you understand why (or does the possible loss of >$6K of computer equipment
- sound like a small risk?)
-

-
- Why would they need Caller ID for that? GENie has my Visa number (that's how
- I get billed) and all of them require some form of address or other priveleged
- information. You're fooling yourself if you think that Caller ID will make a
- difference in that situation. It won't.

-
- If it's dial-in, I assume that people are SUPPOSED to call in. One would also
- assume that passwords were used and other interesting security features. if
- not, time to upgrade that software! We've come a long way in 20 years... :-)

- Oh, nothing spectacular. I have a .signature fungus.
