- this afternoon i picked up a 6uf 50v mylar capacitor, which is a very
- impressive beast: oval in cross section, almost two inches long, and
- to my old eyes, which started out on hardware in 1944 in the signal
- corps as a radio repairman, a REAL capacitor.
-
- after getting the exploded capacitor out of the way, and melting as
- much solder as i could out of the holes, i finally had to redrill the
- holes using the finest bit i possess. i know this is risky, but there
- was no alternative. in this repair you are always working at the
- outer limits of visibility and access. i installed the mylar beast,
- with insulation on both leads, a small amount on the short lead, a
- long piece on the one coming from the upper end, and eventually was
- able to get two solder joins which were solid. cold solder joints are
- a possibility in this, i note. at first one of the connections was a
- cold solder jooint, but by tipping the monitor so as to lest the
- liquidified solder run into the hole along the lead, i eventually got
- a solid connection.
-
- after closing up and booting the system came up on about the fourth
- try. i kept using the emrgency boot button on the back near the phone
- jacks till i got a solid boot, all the way to login. something similar
- occurred yesterday when i used the first (now exploded) capacitor.
-
- what does this mean? why should sitting for 24 hours cause the boot
- to be unsatisfactory?
-
- one thing which occurs to me is that the disk gets cold, and is a bit
- sticky, so the heads maybe are not moving correctly at first. another
- possibility is that the power supply takes time to warm up enough to
- produce suitable power. are these ideas plausible?
-
- i am using a miniscribe 6085 which i installed in early june, at which
- time i also installed a brand spanking new 3b1 power supply. the
- miniscribe appeared new, but might have been an old warehoused beast.
- one never knows.
