  17. The policy of comp.sources.misc is to accept just about anything. Sources
  18. with copyright problems are not accepted.  Unofficial patches are frowned
  19. on if the author/maintainer of the package is actively updating their package.
  20. Its better to send unofficial patches to the author so that they can be 
  21. included in future, tracked, official patches.  comp.sources.unix is the
  22. only newsgroup I can remember having an official policy of not accepting 
  23. shareware.

  25. While I understand the reasoning behind shareware, and have been told that
  26. there are some who actually make a few dollars from it, in the long run it
  27. does not work in UNIX environments as it does in PC environments.

  29. I personally would rather not post shareware since it is not well received.
  30. The policy of some archive sites is that shareware is not to be archived on
  31. their system.  For instance, in this case I can archive the original hebcal 
  32. on uunet since is is distribu-ware. (Don't ask... :-) ) but I can't archive 
  33. hebcal-1.2 since it explicitly states that it is shareware.  So why don't I
  34. just refuse to post shareware you ask ?

  44. I have always stated the policies of comp.sources.misc were determined 
  45. by the needs and wants of its readership. Until enough people indicate 
  46. publically that shareware is unacceptable,  I will continue using the 
  47. current guidelines of accepting shareware even with the headaches and 
  48. extra work it causes...
