- The policy of comp.sources.misc is to accept just about anything. Sources
- with copyright problems are not accepted. Unofficial patches are frowned
- on if the author/maintainer of the package is actively updating their package.
- Its better to send unofficial patches to the author so that they can be
- included in future, tracked, official patches. comp.sources.unix is the
- only newsgroup I can remember having an official policy of not accepting
- shareware.
-
- While I understand the reasoning behind shareware, and have been told that
- there are some who actually make a few dollars from it, in the long run it
- does not work in UNIX environments as it does in PC environments.
-
- I personally would rather not post shareware since it is not well received.
- The policy of some archive sites is that shareware is not to be archived on
- their system. For instance, in this case I can archive the original hebcal
- on uunet since is is distribu-ware. (Don't ask... :-) ) but I can't archive
- hebcal-1.2 since it explicitly states that it is shareware. So why don't I
- just refuse to post shareware you ask ?

- I have always stated the policies of comp.sources.misc were determined
- by the needs and wants of its readership. Until enough people indicate
- publically that shareware is unacceptable, I will continue using the
- current guidelines of accepting shareware even with the headaches and
- extra work it causes...
