- World.std.com (The World) in conjunction with Adam Gaffin and the
- Middlesex News ran a free, public election server. Starting about 8PM
- on the night of the election major results were updated every twenty
- minutes or so.
-
- These results were accessible to anyone on the internet by simply
- typing:
-
- finger election@world.std.com
-
- which reflected back a screenful or two of info.
-
- This kept our system (a Sun4/280 with 80MB, not a small system) very
- busy. In fact, early in the day the system load jumped to over 200
- (anything much over 20 would be considered quite overloaded.) In
- response we made some drastic modifications to the finger daemon
- software which made things only slightly miserable but we muddled
- through.
