- I'm *considering* writing a network management program which basically will
- allow me to see all nodes on all appletalk zones, and to download software
- updates to remote machines.
-
- I know there are some commercial ones out there, but they are either too
- expensive, or don't do what I want (plus I'm slightly masochistic about
- solving my own problems, and I want to learn more about writing network
- programs for appletalk...)
-
- Anyway, I want to include PC's in this idea. While I can buy a localtalk
- card for a PC, all our machines are on ethernet. I'd like to be able to
- write a responder that runs on the PC, that communicates via appletalk (ie
- can register with NBP, send and receive Appletalk Packets, etc) I would
- prefer to be able to do it without having to know about the underlying
- hardware - ie like if I were writing it on a Mac. But if that's not possible,
- I want to at least support PC's on ethernet.
-
- Here's mainly what I need help with (at least for starters):
-
- o What products are available to make a PC visible on an appletalk network
- and does it work with localtalk cards; Ethernet cards?
- o What is available to write programs that use appletalk on a PC?
-
- At the very minimum, I would like to show the PC's on a topology map, just so
- we can see them on the network.
