- THE NEW ALPHA AXP FAMILY OF 64-BIT PROCESSORS FROM DIGITAL
-
- The DFWLUG was treated to a special showing of the brand new DEC 3000
- model 500S AXP 64-bit workstation at it's Meeting last Tuesday.
-
- Performance was incredible on this system which ran the OSF/1 operating
- system and delivered nearly 180 MicroVAX II units of performance.
- Demonstrations of multi-media, Fractal generation, graphics, Xwindow
- applications and more running all at the same time from this single
- powerhouse of a workstation. As time was short during our meeting
- Digital promised that at the next meeting the DFWLUG could reboot the
- same workstation off of it's other disk and run OpenVMS's demos and compilers.
-
- Digital also provided briefing and benchmark packets for all of the new
- ALPHA servers and workstations included in this family of 64-bit processors.
-
- The DEC 3000 400S AXP and DEC 3000 500S AXP begin the family as desktop and
- deskside workstations with 159 and 179.7 MicroVAX Units of Performance.
- Standard SCSI perpherals, turbochannel and standard options will make
- these systems the price performance leaders of 1992-1993.
-
- The DEC 4000 model 610 AXP starts as single, 193.2 MicroVAX Units of
- Performance departmental system/server and can add another CPU card
- for even greater CPU throughput. Standard Future Bus peripherals
- will almost double the I/O possible with workstation systems and
- provide very high performance as a file server or database engine.
-
- The DEC 7000 model 610 AXP is an SMP multi-processor computer room system
- that starts at over 217 MicroVAX Units of Performance and in a 4 CPU
- configuration tops out at over 604 Specthruput numbers. Up to 4 XMI
- channels or 2 XMI and 2 future Bus I/O channels make this a formitable
- Server for thousands of workstations or PCs.
-
- The DEC 1000 model 610 AXP is an SMP multi-processor Mainframe class
- engine that starts at 239 MicroVAX Units of Performance and then turns
- on the power.
-
-
- Benchmark results are for Alpha OpenVMS and should continue to improve
- as Digital refines and continues to optimise their compilers for this
- new 64-bit risc Computing Family.
