- First, no form of Kermit "comes" with VMS. If it is on your system, a system
- manager put it there. Kermit is a freely-available file transfer protocol
- implemented in various programs, including ones called Kermit-32 and C-Kermit
- available from the Kermit clearinghouse at Columbia University.
-
- With that out of the way, I'd like to comment on Kermit's performance. There's
- nothing inherent in the Kermit protocol that will artificially slow it down. In
- fact, I regularly get 230 cps on a 240 cps connection using Kermit-32 V3.3.128
- (the most recent Kermit-32 version) because it employ long packets. Likewise,
- those people I know with V.32 modems who use C-Kermit (a beta release that is
- due out officially very soon) that has been measured to be as or more efficient
- as any of the x,y,zmodem protocols because it employs long packets and sliding
- windows. My recommendation is to get a better version of Kermit for both sides
- of the connection.
