-
- greetings,
-
- During the last few weeks interesting problems have started to show up in
- our Sybase database environment.
- The machines are typically 4500 systems, 64MB with 10MB dedicated to servers.
-
- During big inserts or loads, it seems that time slicing with other Sybase jobs
- is not handled right, resulting in random elapsed times; stand alone
- performance of 2 secs increases to as much as 25 secs when two queries are
- launched simultaneously. Non-documented, much longer response variations
- have been reported. These results are from tests run interactively, no
- client-server network applications involved.
-
- When users disconnect their Macs from the network, or stop the client on the
- Mac, processes are orphaned in the servers. Are there ways to terminate those
- orphans automatically, rather than have them run to completion, then
- find out they have nowhere to go? This problem is ascerbated by the fact that
- extremely long running jobs cause users to disconnect and try again, thus
- creating even more orphans.
-
- We have also experienced cases where a query may decide NOT to use a specific
- index. We are doing considerable drop and recreates of the indexes. Is this
- a standard phenomeon?
-
- We want to run the applications over AppleTalk, using Pathworks on the
- Vaxes, as well as Sequelink. Have you encountered any problems with this,
- or are there ways to tune performance for the network part of the application?
-
- Please reply to my address, I will summarize to the net.
-
- thanks
