Anders,
If I understand you, you would like to build a client server
application which must operate between dissimilar machines
communicating over serial connections. You are familiar with
DECmessageQ and are in a position to use it. It requires
either DECNET or TCP/IP for transport. To use DECmessageQ for
this application requires a way to use TCP/IP over dial-up
telephone circuits.
Use of DECmessageQ should be possible even over telephone lines
privided that you use SLIP (Serial line internet protocol) on
the dial-up PC client and a port on the host. I'm not sure where
you would find a good quality implementation of SLIP.
I believe that Sun MicroSystems includes SLIP in its PC-NFS product.
It may also be a part of the TCP/IP suites of other suppliers (FTP Software in the USA) or in public domain PC internetworking packages available by anonymous FTP. Perhaps others can help. A number of the
commercial packages work properly with Microsoft Windows 3.1 and
respect other protocols which share a connection (probably true
only for those riding on ethernet).
I don't know if there is a way for DEC Pathworks to be used with DECmessageQ over serial lines. Perhaps some DIGITAL personel can help.
Perhaps other readers can recommend or better differentiate the
available MS/DOS TCP/IP products and the availability of SLIP
