THE CHALLENGE OF INNOVATION

UNIX and its cousins find themselves in increasing
use throughout the industry.  Succeeding in the
challenge of meeting the world's expectations of
software is an increasingly difficult task.

USENIX, the technical and professional association
of UNIX users, invites you to its Winter 1993
Conference.  Join top operating systems and
software experts and your fellow professionals to
explore timely and important questions and
innovations pertaining to UNIX and UNIX inspired
programming and technologies.

The conference begins with two full days of
tutorials, both introductory and advanced, taught by
skilled presenters.  The USENIX tutorials offer you
practical, skill-building learning experiences.
Then, three days of technical sessions provide
three complete parallel tracks for you to choose
among.  Technical sessions are filled with refereed
paper presentations, talks by invited experts, and
panel discussions.  The Conference includes a
Vendor Display, Work-in-Progress Reports, and evenings of
Birds-of-a-Feather Sessions.  The USENIX Winter 1993 Conference--

WINTER 1993 VENDOR DISPLAYS

The USENIX Vendor Display will provide a relaxed
environment not the frenzy of an Exhibit Hall in
which conference attendees can take a hands-on
look at what's on display and where vendor
technical support people and conference attendees

**Special Note:  USENIX Conference Meeting Space

Some conference attendees have asked about
conference accommodations.  Here is how USENIX
conference hotels are chosen:  The week-long
USENIX conference places a heavy demand on
meeting space.  To offset the cost of renting
meeting space, USENIX guarantees to a hotel (or
hotels) a minimum number of sleeping rooms rented
by attendees.  In exchange, the hotel provides
meeting space and other services at no direct cost
to USENIX.  Such agreements are complicated and,
because the number of facilities in the U.S. which
can accommodate a USENIX conference is limited,
we typically sign hotel contracts five (!) years in
advance.  These contracts contain penalty clauses
(sometimes exceeding $50,000) if the room block
guarantee is unmet.  Moreover, groups that can't
live up to their contracts find in the future they
have trouble renting space or may have to pay a
higher rate.

There are a couple of consequences to these
arrangements.  One is that it is important when
making your reservation that you state you are
attending the USENIX Conference and that you pay
the USENIX rate, so we get credit towards fulfilling
our room block commitment.  (If you use a
corporation's discount rate, it will not count as a
credit towards the USENIX commitment.).  Another
is that widespread defection from our headquarters
hotel will lead to higher registration fees for
everybody.

We try to choose sites that offer less expensive
room rates or, at least, less expensive hotels
nearby.  Usenet facilitates room sharing; check
comp.org.usenix.roomshare for this.

AIRPORT TO HOTEL TRANSPORTATION

Lindbergh Field, San Diego's international airport,
is located only 15 minutes (8 miles) from the Town
& Country Hotel.  Super Shuttle offers continuous
24 hour van service every 20-30 minutes at a
current cost of $6 one way.  Go to the baggage
claim area, pick up the telephone at the Hotel
Information Board and dial the number designated
for Super Shuttle.  Taxi service is available at an
approximate cost of $12-$15 one way.

TRANSPORTATION COORDINATOR

JNR, Inc., the USENIX Conference transportation
coordinator will help you plan your trip to San
Diego with unbiased schedules and fares for all
airlines, one-call changes and refunds, boarding
passes for all flights, and two free in-flight drink

SIGHTS AND SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS IN SAN DIEGO

Sunshine, scenery and seven miles of shoreline;
fine eating, fun nightlife, and a wide array of
things to do and see, including Mexico! (only 20
miles away).  San Diego abounds with activities for
an enjoyable visit.

Information will be included in your registration
packet on San Diego's many special activities and
attractions, such as:

*In Mission Valley area:  Old Town, historic
Presidio and Heritage Parks, Point Loma and the
Cabrillo National Monument, and Jack Murphy
Stadium-home of the National League Padres and
the NFL Chargers, shopping and restaurants

*San Diego Zoo is noted for rare and exotic species
exhibits and its huge animal collection set in a 100
acre tropical garden.  Take the 40-minute guided
bus tour on the double-deck buses.  With advance
reservation, groups of 15 or more can take a
special "Behind the Scenes" tour into areas not open
to the general public.

*Balboa Park, includes the famous Zoo, Aerospace
Museum, the Fleet Space Theater & Science Center,
Model Railroad Museum, wonderful gardens, art
museums, and much more

*Sea World, home of Shamu

*Scripps Aquarium Museum offers a colorful view
of sea life from the Pacific Ocean.

*Enjoy the beach, hot air balloon rides, boat
cruises.

*Farther afield, visit the Palomar Observatory, the
San Diego Wild Animal Park where 2,200 animals
roam free over 1,800 acres, and San Diego's wine
country

*Mexico-only 20 miles away-is an easy and fun day
trip.  U.S. and Canadian citizens need only valid
identification to recross the border and you may
bring back up to $400 in purchases.  Travel to
Tijuana on the San Diego Trolley, a high speed
trolley that runs from downtown to the border.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR FULL-TIME STUDENTS

A limited number of spaces in each tutorial are
reserved for full-time students at the special fee
of $50.00 per tutorial.  You MUST telephone the
USENIX Conference Office, [phone] during
office hours of 8:30 am-5:00 pm Pacific Time
Monday-Friday, to confirm availability and make a
reservation. You will receive a reservation code
number.  This number MUST appear on your
Registration Form. Your registration form with full
payment and a photocopy of your current student
I.D. card MUST arrive within 14 days from the date
of your reservation.  If your registration form and
payment do not arrive by that date, your
reservation will be cancelled. This special fee is
non-transferable.

Student Grants are also available to full-time students.
The deadline for grant applications is December 15, 1992.
