- (I hope this is the right place to ask; it seems better than one
- of the more general groups, since the main question is a networking one.)
-
- (Some of you may have seen a precursor to this question on info-ibmpc;
- I think I have my questions narrowed down more now.)
-
- I am in need of a workstation for a "remote" one-person office. The
- workstation will have a dial-up connection through a V32bis modem to a
- slip-server connected to the internet. It will need to interact with
- a couple of Suns (SunOS Unix) over the net. It does not need the
- power of a Sparc or a Next (not to mention the likelihood of service
- problems), so it would appear that a 386 or 486 of some flavor under
- OS/2 is one option. (Straight DOS or DOS+Windows is unacceptable
- because of the file-name restrictions.) I don't really want the
- (apparent) hassle of setting up and running a one-person unix, and
- even there I'm not sure what GUI possibilities there are. (That's a
- different question.)
-
- My question is this. Is there some combination of NFS, TCP/IP, and
- SLIP software that will allow the file systems/directories on the
- remote Sun's to be "mounted" as if they were on the OS/2 desktop? (If
- so, what do you need at both ends and how hard is it to install,
- configure, and maintain?) When that is done, what can you do with it?
- (Cause files to be moved/copied on the Sun by moving their icons on
- the OS/2 DT? Rename files and/or change their attributes on the Sun
- through the OS/2 DT? Cause a file on the Sun to be printed on a local
- [to the OS/2 machine] printer by properly dragging its icon? Access
- files on the Sun within OS/2 applications as if they were on the OS/2
- machine? -- for instance, could WordPerfect-for-OS/2 [there is one
- isn't there?] on the OS/2 machine access WordPerfect files that had
- been put on the Sun via WP5.1 & PC-NFS on some other PC's locally
- connected to the Sun?) All at the same time as other applications
- were running on the OS/2 machine, e.g, a mail handler, telnet
- sessions, and ftp's to other machines?
-
- I suspect X-windows is not a suitable solution, but comments on
- that would be welcome too.
