- While I agree that the windowed DOS graphics programs were really
- slow, this is a VERY big deal to me. I write software for industrial
- automation, and one of my programs is a DOS graphics (Borland BGI)
- program that communicates with a remote industrial controller over
- a serial line. While everything does slow down when windowed
- (actually a positive for some testing), I still find it very useful to
- window the application while monitoring a process, so that I can do
- some other work (look at the code, write documentation, read news,
- etc.). Many of the processes that I am monitoring are very slow
- acting, and I can't spare the time to have my machine dedicated to one
- task for 2 hours.
-
- I find it unbelievable that using 640x480x16 lets me window my app
- (albeit with some color changes), while the "new & improved"
- 640x480x256 driver does not support this. As an aside, when I have
- tried this, and gotten the "suspended app" message - if I then
- CTRL-ESC and select the app, I get a perfect window of the app -
- correct colors and all. Unfortunately, it is suspended.
-
- So, in the end, the CSD has pretty much been a wash for me - can't use
- the new drivers, and while I believe that it is an improvement, I
- can't really point to anything that is better.
-
- 2 steps forward, 1.99 steps back.
