  11. IBM ANNOUNCES SOFTWARE MOTION VIDEO SUPPORT FOR OS/2
  12. November 10, 1992
  13.
  14. WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Nov. 10 . . . IBM today is announcing
  15. software motion video support for the OS/2* platform.  This
  16. support is contained within IBM's Multimedia Presentation
  17. Manager/2* (MMPM/2) beta version which is now being made
  18. available to developers.
  19.
  20. Software motion video is a technology that provides digital
  21. video in a window on the desktop without a video overlay board.
  22. An audio card is required to play back the audio with the digital
  23. video.
  24.
  25. The MMPM/2 beta contains a generic video player called
  26. Matinee'*.  This interfaces with an installable video algorithm
  27. manager, providing playback of assorted compressed video formats.
  28.
  29. While MMPM/2 will ultimately support multiple video
  30. compressions algorithms, the beta package contains: Ultimotion*,
  31. an IBM-developed video compression algorithm, optimized for high
  32. quality software video playback; and Photomotion*, a compression
  33. algorithm optimized for low-power CPU's.
  34.
  35. In the beta version is a capture tool for movie creation and
  36. a large number of sample movies.
  37.
  38. IBM is also working with Intel to support the video
  39. compression algorithm family, Indeo** video technology, Intel's
  40. real time scalable video solution.  Indeo video provides playback
  41. under Matinee' in a software-only environment, or under the
  42. Actionmedia** II card in a hardware-assisted environment.
  43.
  44. While the quality of Ultimotion makes it the premier digital
  45. video software for title publishing and application development,
  46. the networking and cross platform qualities of Indeo video make
  47. it a logical choice for a networked business environment.
  48.
  49. "We are pleased to be providing this advanced multimedia
  50. function in OS/2," said Lee Reiswig, Assistant General Manager of
  51. IBM's Personal Systems Programming.  "The robustness of OS/2 has
  52. allowed us to provide very reliable and very high-quality
  53. software motion video with unsurpassed audio and video
  54. synchronization."
  55.
  56. These new features of MMPM/2 will be made generally
  57. available when the product meets customer requirements as
  58.  identified by the beta users.
