- The virtual desktop provided by Trident is fairly limiting. I believe the
- virtual desktop refered to by the original is something quite different.
-
- The two virtual desktop packages that I am familiar with are tvtwm for X
- Windows and Xerox's Rooms for MS Windows. Both systems let you define your
- desktop as a array of screens. For example, I can define my desktop to be
- 8 screens wide and 3 screens high. Your physical screen is a view into
- this desktop. There is generally a way to get a meta-view that display a
- compressed version of the entire virtual desktop on the physical screen so
- the user can rapidly more windows around and nagivate through the desktop.
-
-
- Virtual desktops are really nice. The allow you to partition your work
- into different screen areas and jump between them as needed without
- destroying the position of the windows or even minimizing the windows.
-
- I would encourage people to try and checkout Xerox Rooms. It is a rather
- nice package. I have asked various Xerox sales reps if they are planning
- on porting Rooms to OS/2 and their statement was that they would if there
- was a demand for it. If you can't actually see the package, I belive BYTE
- magazine had an article on Rooms about two years back (when it was still in
- the research stage). I will try to find a reference for it.
