- GY I'm curious. Is this a DOS or an OS/2 virus, and if OS/2 what are the
- GY symptoms. This is very important
-
- My two cents worth. Just spent last weekend cleaning the stoned virus off
- of all the machines in our office. We only had one machine that was
- running OS/2 in the office, and every time we tried to copy stuff off of
- diskettes and run programs that were copied from these diskettes, we were
- getting all kinds of Traps, and General protection violation errors.
- Little did we know at the time, that it was the Stoned virus trying to
- write to the partition table!
- I checked the machine for the stoned virus, and did *NOT* find it in the
- partition table (Whee!) but *DID* find the virus in several executeable
- files (the ones copied from the floppies).
-
- So, I said great!... we will just get rid of those files and then we will
- be done with this one.
-
- Wrong! Unfortunately, the machine is configured for Dual-Boot.
-
- My co-worker, who was helping me get rid of all this crap, and who doesnt
- like to use OS/2, booted the machine with DOS and made the tragic mistake of
- running one of these programs from the hard disk, while he was in the
- process of setting up to get rid of the infected programs.
-
- Since these programs were run on top of DOS, the Partition table on the
- disk was subsequently infected. I coulda killed the bum!!!
-
- We then had to do the machine just like we did all the rest. In other
- words, a FULL Backup, "Clean" the stoned virus, which always ends up
- trashing the partition table when getting rid of the Stoned virus... then
- FDISK... Re-partition... Re-Format...and Restore the Backup.
