- I installed OS/2 last week on a snappy system (50MHz 486DX, EISA SCSI
- controller, 14ms hard drive); the only slug is the Tseng video, which
- is just keeping the slot warm until ATI releases the EISA Ultra Pro.
-
- Things were very fast when I first installed, but they slowed down
- considerably within a few days. With a half-dozen windows open (icon
- views of folders), I can double-click on a text file and have to wait
- several seconds before the icon grays - plus several more until the
- editor actually opens. Things were much peppier when I first installed.
-
- Since my installation, I've added a few dozen directories and several
- hundred text and executable files, as well as a few thousand .ico files
- (I keep no more than 200 of these in any single directory). I notice
- that folders with .ico files in them open even more slowly than other
- operations; is this significant?
-
- I haven't tweaked much yet and I'm sure I can coax somewhat better
- performance out of the system by following the suggestions in the FAQ
- (all I've done so far is to turn automation off). But I don't understand
- the remarkable slowdown in all operations; the equally untweaked system
- I first configured had much better response in general. The slowdown
- seems to reflect slow disk response; I can hear the hard disk turning
- for several seconds before a selected icon grays, etc. I realize, of
- course, that increasing the number of files on a disk can slow things
- down, but I don't have a sense for how much degradation is normal. Are my
- expectations too high?
-
- Thanks,
-
- David
