- I installed the CSD last week on a Dell 310 (386DX-20,8MB RAM),240MB spread over
- 2 ESDI drives, 2 FAT partitions and 1 HPFS partition. I had occasion to
- delete a subdirectory containing about 110 files, with an average size of
- 1k bytes. The operation seemed very slow, so I did some further testing.
- The files were all on one of the FAT partitions.
-
- Native DOS, delete 110 files < 2 secs
- OS2 window 18 secs
- DOS window under OS2 3 minutes, 10 seconds!!!
-
- The windows under OS2 were not full-screen. The timings are repeatable, even
- after a reboot. The deldir option in the OS2 config.sys file is commented
- out, so the delete should only be deleting and not copying. The OS2 figures,
- especially the dos window ones are clearly not acceptable. I also have the
- impression that my system is swapping more than it was before I installed the
- CSD, but that is a purely subjective data point. I have no pre-CSD figures
- for the delete operation, so OS2 may always have been a poor performer in that
- area.
-
- If anyone has any ideas about this, I'd sure appreciate some advice. The only
- time I have ever seen disk performance this poor was when I was tuning the
- disk interleave on a real-time OS on the same hardware. For different
- interleaves, the system would get faster and faster, up until a certain point
- and then it would slow to a crawl.
