- KB>I'm planning on reconfiguring my system this weekend to partition my disk
- and
- KB>get HPFS running. I've got a 120Mb hard drive to work with and was
- wondering
- KB>what the general net.wisdom is for configuring the drive. My system is a
- KB>386/33 with 8Mb.
-
- KB>I'd like to put OS/2 in it's own partition running HPFS.
- KB>How large should this partition be?
- KB>Would you recommend making two or three partitions for data/applications?
- Any
- KB>recommendations on keeping them as FAT vs. HPFS partitions?
-
- I have a mixture. My OS/2 boot disk is HPFS. I use this disk for
- frequently used files specific to OS/2 (like the swapper files and OS/2
- utilities). I have a DOS FAT boot disk for running the one program that
- refuses to behave under OS/2 (America OnLine (AOL) / Geoworks). This
- partition is just large enough for DOS and DOS utils and AOL.. These two
- boot disks cannot both be visable at the same time, so I have a third
- partitton (which is FAT) for sharing data and programs in both environments.
- I'd recommend 50 meg for HPFS boot disk, 5-10 meg for DOS boot disk (FAT),
- 50-55 meg FAT disk for shared data.
-
- KB>Has anyone had problems with DOS software running from an HPFS volume? Or
- KB>games like Civilization?
-
- I've had no problems. If you use the long filenames, DOS programs (and some
- OS/2 programs) cannot see them. But there are no problems if you stick to
- 8.3 format. OS/2 does a good job of insulating the application from the
- file system, so it does not know whether it is using FAT or HPFS.
-
- KB>And since I'm looking at going with HPFS, are there any good backup packages
- KB>out there that work with HPFS? I'd prefer shareware so I can try them out
- KB>first.
-
- The only sure backup right now may be OS/2 BACKUP command.
