- I don't know why it is, but I have heard of a number of people having
- memory problems after mixing SIMM types. It would appear that the
- electrical characteristics of the two kinds of chips are just enough
- different to cause problems with programs that heavily exercise the
- memory and are sensitive to timing quirks (UNIX, OS/2, Windows 3.1 -
- in about that order from most sensitive to least). After all, there
- are a number of other memory characteristics besides 'cycle time' that
- could affect your timing. For example, Sun recommends against using
- 3rd party memory on some (but only some) of their machines because it
- doesn't match Sun memory in one characteristic (exact name slips my
- mind -- EEC discharge time, or something like that), even if the
- memory itself is the same speed. Apparently some Sun motherboards are
- running tight enough timing that this slight difference can cause
- memory errors.
