- I should have known better......
-
- One of my co-workers has been admiring my OS/2-bearing 486 for a few weeks now
- and yesterday he asked me to install it on his 386sx/25.....
-
- I said "yes"....
-
- With that simple word began the OS/2 install from Hell.
-
- I got to work at 7am, thinking "no problem, all over by 8:30." It seemed
- simple enough. He ran most apps from our LAN. With only 49 "real" megs to play
- with, there wasn't much room left after MS-DOS5, Windows 3.1, Qemm 6.02,
- Norton Utilities, and Superbase4.
-
- I'm getting pretty good at "skinny" installs, so I thought "OK a 33meg OS/2
- partition and a 16meg data partition".
-
- BTW, I added 4megs of RAM to bring him up to 8.
-
- Well.....lets just say that for the past two days he has had nothing but
- problems. Seems my install was a bit too skinny. When he tried to print from
- Word for Windows, the combined print spooling and swap file expanding killed
- him every time......33megs is ok if you use OS/2 apps, BTW. That Microsoft
- stuff eats your resources alive......
-
- After a couple of days of crippled functionality, I re-formatted (38megs and
- 11megs). Better! But I played with the system before applying the CSD and
- forgot about the GA expanding swappper.dat file....*BOOM*...down she went in a
- screaming heap.....just when I thought I might go home...(11PM)
-
- Ok....can't leave it like that......lets put the CSD on.
-
- Uh oh....Trap000D in diskette 8 of the CSD....which can't be interrupted
- (I proved it...).
-
- Try a re-boot....
-
- "no kernel...please insert diskette".
-
- Hmmm....OK...lets make the whole damn disk the OS/2 partition and he can run
- *all* his apps from the LAN!
-
- So I delete the partitions and insert the Installation Diskette to start from
- scratch. Two red-screen format failures later........
-
- Well I know the answer to that. I get out the MS-DOS diskettes and go through
- the first 1/3 of the install (the disk formatting part...)
-
- Now its 01:36 am NZDT and I have just put diskette 15 of the GA into the
- floppy drive. Only the CSD, Novell requester, Excel and W4Win to go and I can
- go home!
-
- Maybe I won't bother........:-)
