  13. Here is a good mindbender for anyone out there who has a tape backup.
  14. If anyone can shed some light, or at least let me know what they have
  15. as far as hardware, it will be greately appreciated.

  17. What I have:  I have 2 60Meg tape units purchased from Sysgen (Reliant) 
  18. The markings on the drive read "CaliPer CP-60B".  I suspect Sysgen
  19. purchases these drives from someone else, but who?  Anyone know?
  20. One drive has a sticker on the front that says: QTD-60i.  Both units
  21. are the same.

  23. One controller card is an EV-831.  I have no documentation for this card
  24. anywhere.  The other controller is from Sysgen.  I have no detailed info
  25. on this card either (only "set these jumpers for this drive, etc...")

  27. I suspect the drives are really Tecmar QT-60i (or very similar) because
  28. of the label on the one unit.  These drives are pretty old, by the way, 
  29. at least 3 years.

  31. I have an old copy of Sytos for DOS, and I can upgrade for $90 U.S. 
  32. I found out from an associate who seems to remember that the EV-831 is
  33. a slow card, (ie. had to add wait states to run on an 8Mhz bus).  Is this
  34. true?
  35. What I want to do is this.  I want to use Sytos, since I can get it cheap.
  36. It would be nice to use these drives, since I already have them.  I need
  37. to find a decent controller.  Finding a compressing controller would be nice,
  38. but any info would be helpful.  Specifically:
  39. 1) Does anyone know who makes the EV-831 board.  Phone number?
  40. 2) Does anyone have a Tecmar drive or have a phone number for them?
  41. 3) Does anyone have any specs for either of the above units?
  42. 4) The Sytos manual says the controller for a QT-60i is a PC-36 or a 
  43.    Tecmar QIC-02.  Does anyone know anything about these cards?

  46. I got a letter from Sysgen offering me an upgrade to a newer 120MB drive
  47. for $200 U.S.  They will include Central Point Backup for DOS/Windows.  I
  48. can get is cheaper with no software.  It uses the QIC-80 format (not
  49. supported under Sytos - too bad).  I know that IBM makes a program
  50. called PM Tape.  IBM's support line didn't have any info on the formats
  51. supported.  Does anyone know if IBM supports a QIC-80 format.  If so,
  52. then I can get PM-Tape for $148 and a 120MB Drive for ~$200.  Otherwise,
  53. I'll stay with the same drive I have (60M), upgrade to Sytos Plus for OS/2 
  54. and try to find a controller.

  56. Any comments about PM-Tape?  WIll id backup open (system) files.  Can it
  57. be run across the network?
