- It seems like this is very good advice, based on what I have been reading
- here. I think my experience is fairly typical of buyers who buy clone PCs.
- Heres summary of what many of us find in the clone marketplace -
-
- CPU - there are great values in high end 386s, or 486 motherboards.
- and not much difference in price between them
- case and power supply - go for what you need, ( for lots of space
- get a tower, etc.)
- hard drive - fantastic performance in the ide drives. $325 for 125 meg,
- or $550 for 200 meg
- keyboard - $35 gets you a cheap feeling, but adequate KBD
- memory - $30-35 per meg
- Then when you get down to video, what do you do? The clone shop gives
- you a choice of 512 k or 1 meg SVGA cards, and a choice of non-interlaced
- or interlaced monitor. 1 meg goes with the higher resolution and costs
- $20 bucks more so you go for the 1 meg. You have probably just purchased
- a dreaded Trident 8900 card! (for about $70). For another $130 you
- could have a Diamond Stealth accelerator card, or for about $150 I am
- told, you could get a 24X. (Based on what a friend told me they were
- selling for at NJ PC show last week.)
-
- Question: If all of us Trident owners make the jump up to Diamond
- cards, whats the difference between the 24X for $150 and the Speedstar
- for $200? And what does someone offer me for the Trident?
