  19.     REDMOND, Wash. * Nov. 2, 1992 * Microsoft
  20. Corporation announced today worldwide availability of the
  21. Microsoft* Visual Basic* Programming system for Windows
  22. version 2.0.  The high productivity programming system for
  23. Windows includes more than 300 new features and enhancements
  24. that provide for faster applications, access to advanced features of
  25. the Microsoft Windows* operating system and greater developer
  26. productivity.
  27.     "Like many large companies, Microsoft has been using
  28. Visual Basic 1.0 for a number of internal projects since it was
  29. introduced," said Mike Maples, executive vice president products at
  30. Microsoft.  "Now, with the performance and capacity
  31. enhancements in version 2.0, we are choosing Visual Basic to
  32. develop packaged software products ourselves.  Visual Basic 2.0's
  33. rapid development capability will help us get products to market
  34. more quickly."
  35.     "Visual Basic 2.0 delivers on thousands of requests from
  36. Windows-based developers all over the world," said Tom Button,
  37. group product manager for applications programmability at
  38. Microsoft.  "It gives our customers the fastest possible way to
  39. program for the Windows operating system and gives them the
  40. power to create sophisticated, industrial strength applications."

  42. New Improved Visual Basic 2.0
  43.     To better serve the needs of a broad range of developers,
  44. Visual Basic 2.0 is offered in two editions, Standard and
  45. Professional.  Programmers using the Standard Edition can create
  46. applications for Windows quickly * and easily * due to many
  47. enhancements:
  48.     *   Improved performance.
  49.         -Visual Basic 2.0 delivers faster and smaller .EXE's
  50.         than the previous version.
  51.         -Applications load up to 400 percent faster
  52.         -Applications are 38 percent smaller
  53.     *   Greater capacity.  Developers can create larger, more
  54.         sophisticated applications.  Huge arrays, unlimited
  55.         string space and more than twice the code capacity are
  56.         built in.
  57.     *   New Debugging Tools.  Programmers can diagnose
  58.         code problems quickly with new Watch Expressions,
  59.         Conditional Break Expressions and a Calls window.
  60.     *   Better support for development teams.  ASCII
  61.         representations of all files enables source library
  62.         management (SLM) systems and provide for an open
  63.         system for third party CASE tools.
  64.     *   New Properties Window.  Developers can set all of
  65.         the properties of a control or object from a single
  66.         window.  Multiple (marquee) selection lets developers
  67.         set properties of several controls simultaneously and
  68.         aids in screen layout and forms creation.
  69.     *   New Tool Bar.  Puts common programming and
  70.         debugging operations a mouse click away.
  71.     *   True MDI support.  Multiple document interface
  72.         (MDI) and multiple dynamic instances of forms help
  73.         developers create commercial-quality applications.
  74.     *   Color-coded syntax.  Graphically highlights different
  75.         language elements for the developer.  The enhanced
  76.         editing capabilities of the Code window and a new
  77.         procedures browser combine to make event driven
  78.         programming even easier.
  79.     *   New support for international currency, time and
  80.         date formats.  Makes it quick and easy to create
  81.         applications for international markets.
  82.     *   18 extensively commented sample applications.  (27

  84.         and features of Visual Basic.

  86.         with spreadsheet-like displays.

  88. Professional Edition
  89.     The Professional Edition of Visual Basic is designed for
  90. MIS staff, corporate programmers, analysts, consultants, value-
  91. added resellers and independent software vendors writing vertical
  92. market programs.  The Professional Edition includes all of the
  93. improvements and new features found in the Standard Edition plus
  94. enhanced versions of all features formerly found in the Professional
  95. Toolkit.  The program also provides tools to create new workgroup
  96. and database access applications:
  97.     *   Two new Messaging API (MAPI) controls.
  98.         Developers using Visual Basic can create mail-enabled
  99.         and other workgroup applications.
  100.     *   Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) support.
  101.         Provides data access to a variety of client-server, host-
  102.         based and local databases.
  103.     *   New Masked Edit Control.  Supports formatted data
  104.         entry like social security or telephone numbers.
  105.     *   Communications Control.  Provides quick access to
  106.         serial communications for binary or ASCII data transfer
  107.         via modem.
  108.     *   Two new Windows for Pens controls.  Supports
  109.         simulated keyboard and inking functionality for storing
  110.         ink as data.
  111.     *   Windows 3.1 support.  Includes Windows 3.1 help
  112.         compiler and online API references.
  113.     *   New Control Development Kit.  256 color, DDE,
  114.         ASCII, and graphical control development guidelines
  115.         allow third parties to create even more powerful
  116.         custom controls.
  117.     "Visual Basic provides developers with fast access to
  118. important new capabilities of Windows," said Button. "Visual Basic
  119. makes it easier than ever before to build production-quality
  120. workgroup and client-server applications."

  123.     The high productivity of Visual Basic has made it a popular
  124. choice for vertical market applications and internal MIS
  125. development projects.  With the improvements in Visual Basic 2.0,
  126. software publishers are now using Visual Basic for horizontal,
  127. packaged software products.
  128.     "Visual Basic 2.0 is a significant enhancement over version
  129. 1.0," said John Boebinger, manager of development for TeamLinks
  130. at Digital Equipment Corporation.  "We have measured a
  131. substantial increase in the speed of our product and decrease in the size."

  133. Pricing and Availability
  134.     The Standard Edition of  Microsoft Visual Basic is available
  135. now for the suggested retail price of $199.  Upgrades for Visual
  136. Basic 1.0 & Toolkit owners is $79.  The Professional Edition of
  137. Visual Basic is available for the suggested retail price of $495.
  138. Upgrades from Standard Edition 1.0 and 2.0 is $199 and for
  139. Professional Toolkit owners it is $99.

  141. System Requirements
  142.     Visual Basic 2.0 requires Microsoft Windows 3.0 or higher,
  143. 286 or higher microprocessor, a hard disk, EGA, VGA, 8514 or
  144. Hercules* display, 1MB of RAM and a mouse.
  145. Visual Basic Popularity
  146.     A comprehensive user survey* conducted one year after the
  147. May 1991 release of Visual Basic 1.0 showed that more than 113,000
  148. applications had been developed and shipped with the product.  An average
  149. of 44 users per Visual Basic-created application totals nearly 5 million
  150. active Visual Basic-created applications.  The Visual Basic
  151. programming system is also one of the most cost-effective tools of
  152. its type, with run-time and royalty-free implementation that allow
  153. for developers to distribute finished applications to customers cost
  154. effectively.
