- I recently picked up a copy of Brian Livingston's book "Windows 3.1 Secrets"
- and yesterday tried to load some of the goodies from the enclosed disks.
- Most of them loaded cleanly, but the process wasn't all sweetness and light.
-
- Problem #1: the installer has problems. Parts of the scroll boxes are cut
- off by the slider bar; this may be partly because I'm using an EGA (at least
- until the company delivers the new machine I've ordered). In perhaps a
- half dozen invocations the "ADD ALL" button was available only once (and
- not on the first try); on all other attempts it was dimmed.
-
- Problem #2: the installer creates a control file for its own use (WWW-PROD.INI)
- which serves no possible function I can see.
-
- Problem #3: Attempting to load the member W_BAT the installer calls for
- disk #2, but fails to accept that disk when it is inserted in the drive.
- Your only option is to cancel the installation process.
-
- Problem #4 (and easily the worst): Attempting to load any of four specific
- applications from the disk forces a reboot. While trying to load any of
- them (HUNTER, WINEDIT, WINUNARC, XCLOCK) you get the error dialog box:
-
- ERROR DURING CODE EXPANSION
-
- with an "OK" button, but when you click on the button the error message
- box just gets redisplayed. Since the main window has no control menu
- (another design error) there's nothing you can do to get out; even
- the much-advertised CTRL-ALT-DEL trap in Windows 3.1 doesn't help. The
- only solution is to reboot the system.
