- ASPI4DOS is a disk driver that:
-
- 1. Comes with the Adaptec 1542B SCSI controller card, assuming that you
- bought the card + driver kit.
-
- 2. Provides "ASPI functions", which are used, by other high-level
- drivers, to access various non-hard disk devices on the SCSI bus,
- such as CDROMs, tape drives, etc..
-
- 2. You supposedly need to run with Windows 3.1. If you don't use it,
- you have to use the Win 3.1 SMARTDRV with double buffering, which
- slows down your system by quite a bit.
-
- 3. Does not seem to work on all systems. It seems to work fine for some
- people, but not for others (like me). Everyone seems to be
- mystified. Microsoft technical support say that you must still use
- SMARTDRV with double buffering, while Adaptec technical support say
- that ASPI4DOS is all you need. I'd really like to clear things up,
- as I want to attach a CDROM drive to my 1542 but can't, because
- ASPI4DOS seems to cause my system to crash (and I've tried just about
- everything to fix this, except replacing the 1542 and hard disk).
