- I don't think there is much danger in chip makers like S3 designing
- hardware optimized for winmarks and not good for anything else.
- I think the danger is that companies, when pressed for time,
- will optimize those few things tested by winmarks when writing their
- windows drivers at the expense of important things not tested by winmarks.
- I think diamond did this with their initial
- 256 color 24X drivers. They got over 10 million winmarks, but
- performed poorly on windows text. When I got the databook for the
- WD90c31, I could see plainly that the board had hardware functions
- that were designed to speed up bitmap font text. Fortunately,
- diamond came though with drivers that are well rounded and perform
- well on windows text. I understand however, that benchmarks
- sell boards, and I bought my 24X because I was impressed by the
- 10 million winmark number. I was angry for only a short while
- after I got the board and before I got the well-rounded drivers.
- Now I am extremely pleased with it.
-
- Also, alot of people are complaining that the 24X can do 640x480x24bit
- and 800x600x32K at only 60Hz (it can do 640x480x32K at 72Hz).
- The reason it has this limitation is not the WD90c31, but rather the
- bandwidth of the dram. I am sure it would be possible to have
- a '90c31 board that uses vram or really fast dram that does the
- high refresh rates in these modes, but it would cost alot more.
