- Chill out. The problem really is with ASPI4DOS/Windows.
-
- As part of another test, I eliminated *ALL* spurious lines out of
- config.sys and autoexec.bat, *DELETED* *ALL* of C:\WINDOWS, rebooted my
- machine using the minimal config.sys and autoexec.bat, and tried
- reinstalling Windows *FROM* *SCRATCH*. Windows crashed and trashed my
- hard disk if I used ASPI4DOS. I then had to run chkdsk/f to fix the
- disk. If I use the unsupported SCSIHA.SYS driver, everything works
- fine, but I lose access to the ASPI drivers, which I need if I ever want
- to attach a CDROM.
-
- In case you still think that I'm an idiot, the above was also done
- under the following circumstances:
-
- * MSD*S 5.0 was loaded low (no UMBs). Absolutely nothing was loaded
- into high memory.
-
- * EMM was excluded in the range A000-DFFF.
-
- * STACKS were maxed out at 64,512.
-
- * FILES and BUFFERS were set to 40.
-
- During other attempts, I've also tried replacing the motherboard
- (from a 25Mhz 386 to a 33MHz 486) and pulling out all unnecessary cards
- (serial/parallel I/O, soundcard, etc.). Tonight, I'm probably going to
- swap out my video card (it's highly unlikely that this could cause any
- problems, but it does have provision for using an interrupt).
