- Several months ago I carefully evaluated each and every menu program in
- simtel's MENU directory. I run a lab of 486-33 pc's, and the need for a
- menu shell was apparent. I chose HDM IV over all the others, because it
- is completely nonresident, allows security, is mouse driven, and is relatively
- easy to use. You can also set up nested menus; each entry on a menu page
- can call up another complete menu tree. You can have userids, and each user
- can have his/her own customized menu. The finest feature I like about it
- is that it can automatically run any menu entry at a preset time, a la 'cron'.
- I set a system backup late at night, and each PC will activate by itself.
-
- It fills our needs completely, and it cost about $200 for a single server
- with unlimited users. A bargain by our standards, rather than plunking
- down $40-$100 for each copy of other less-functional menu programs.
-
- The only semi-drawback I've found is that a menu entry's associated commands
- line is limited to 255 characters, including macros. The longest batch files
- that won't fit must be called, but we have very few programs that need this.
