  13.     Ever since I've upgraded to Linux kernel version 0.98pl3 (and now pl4)
  14. I've been unable to get xdm to work properly. Actually, I'm not sure whether
  15. this problem lies with xdm or xterm - when I boot the system with xdm enabled,
  16. everything works fine up to when I attempt to start an xterm. At this point,
  17. the disk makes noise for a couple of seconds and then absolutely nothing
  18. happens. Going back over the .xsession-errors files in users' home dirs, they
  19. contain the error

  21. xterm: Error 14, errno 19: No such device
  22.  
  23. When I start X from xinit off of a VC, everything works fine.
  24. Can anyone shed some light on this strange problem?

  26. (for all I know, it might not have anything to do with the kernel - it could 
  27. be init or something, though I rather doubt it)
