  11. Well.. I got myself the S3 chipset version of X386 1.1 from 
  12. ftp.robots.ox.ac.uk, and set up all the right dirs, however when I
  13. run X, I seem to be getting just the default (at least I hope its
  14. default) blue 'desktop' background. I'm running 800x600 mode and
  15. do have both Xconfig and .xinitrc in my home dir and I did setup
  16. the DISPLAY variable and paths et al. Like I said, I get this nice
  17. screen with no mouse and no further disk activity, except about 30
  18. seconds later, my hard disk does get active one last time (paging?)
  19. Nothing works, not even Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, and I have to perform
  20. a hard reset. When I start Linux, by the way, my Genius serial mouse
  21. at COM1 is not recognized. Should I use the Microsoft setting in the
  22. mouse entry of Xconfig (they are supposed to be compatible)? I even 
  23. tried 'startx > err', but after a reboot, the err file is empty.

  25. That brings me to a second question. What if my systems locks up, and 
  26. I have to reboot. I can't sync, so is it possible that I may lose 
  27. some disk data that hasn't been flushed yet?
