- Hello. I installed the SLS distribution of Linux (0.98.1) and X Windows.
- And I'm impressed but I have a little problem. I hope somebody
- could help me.
-
- I have a Paradise compatible CVGA 1024 (512Kb) and a Morse VGA
- Plus monitor (800x600, 1024x768 interlaced). X finds my card
- and tells me it's a 'pvga1'. I don't know the clock values of
- CVGA (since the manual says nothing about them) but X tells
- me '25 28 36 0 0 0 0 0'.
-
- X works fine at standard 640x480 VGA resolution. I can even
- get 800x600 at 28MHz clock, but it flickers too much and
- there are no borders i.e. the image covers the whole screen.
-
- At 36MHz it doesn't work. The image is quite good, its
- centered and even the size is quite good. But there are
- horizontal stripes all over the screen. They are not
- in the video RAM since they appear randomly and only
- very short periods at a time (i.e. I can barely see them).
- But when I move the mouse a real circus begins. There
- are a lot of stripes, especially around the (white)
- windows. Every third or fourth line seems to shift or
- actually grow to the right (or left), for example:
-
- ----------------------------
- l l-------- <- white stripe
- l l
- l white window l-------- <- white stripe
- ----------------------------
-
- The stripes disappear almost entirely when I stop moving the
- mouse.
- At the middle (horizontally) of the screen it seems like there
- were two mouse cursors since parts of the cursor (a cross) shift
- to the left or right.
-
- In DOS, Windows and OS/2 I can get 800x600 without flickering.
- I don't know the clock value though.
-
- According to my cards manual the values it uses are:
- horiz.freq. vert. freq.
- 800x600x16: 35.2KHz 56.2Hz
- 1024x768x16: 35.5KHz 86.9Hz interlaced
-
- (1024x768 doesn't work since X tells 512Kb isn't enough.)
-
- I found a program named 'timings.exe' which tells me the
- default values for the 800x600 mode (they where quite similar
- to what I had found by calculating):
-
- 800 840 984 1024 600 600 610 623 Interlace
- (Interlace!? Well, I think that part isn't correct.)
-
- I have also tried every value I have seen posted here and
- those in the Xconfig.sample and Xconfig.orig and ...
-
- Help!?
