- Hello everybody,
-
- a small but annoying problem: What's the correct way partitioning a
- hard disk to use DOS and Linux simultaneously ??
- I have read the FAQ/Install Notes/README's/Digests but the answers are'nt
- clear (for me!!).
-
- SITUATION: I have one DOS partition on my PC; the rest of the disk is empty
- (to store Linux) and not partitioned.
- Installing SLS package (disks a1,a2), running fdisk to partition
- the rest of the hard disk for Linux. The DOS partition on /dev/hda1
- has starting/beginning cylinder: 1 (like the SLS README).
- Writing the partition table and booting DOS
- --> NO. Error message: partition table invalid.
- There is no other way than installing DOS again (DOS fdisk
- on the DOS partition, format etc.)
- After that work everything works, but I have to install every DOS
- program again. Last night I had to repartion Linux and the game,
- mentioned above, starts again. UHHHHHH ...
-

-
- MY USELESS SOLUTIONS:
- I read something like beginning sector of DOS should be 1 and
- starting sector of DOS 17:
- QUOTING FROM Linux fdisk-README:
- Disk /dev/hda: 5 heads, 17 sectors, 977 cylinders
- Device Boot Begin Start End Blocks Id System
- /dev/hda1 * 1 17 20059 10021+ 1 DOS 12-bit FAT
- /dev/hda2 71060 71060 83044 5992+ 5 Extended
- /dev/hda3 * 20060 20060 71059 25500 81 Linux/MINIX
- /dev/hda5 71061 71061 79559 4249+ 82 Linux swap
- /dev/hda6 80002 80018 83044 1734 1 DOS 12-bit FAT
-
- There are 5 partitions reported; /dev/hda4 does not appear because it is
- not allocated. Partitions 1 and 3 are flagged as bootable. Note that
- the start of data in both DOS partitions is 16 sectors after the
- beginning of the partition: this is one reason why you should use DOS's
- own fdisk to create DOS partitions.
-
-
- BUT: I have no success in using this strategy. Besides that I have
- DOS 16-bit >=32Bit partition and a other disk geometry as the example above.
- Is that the solution ??
-
-
-
-
- IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE WHO CAN GIVE ME A HINT.
-
- Thanks Stefan
