- Well, I've read all of the previous posts about getting xdm to work and
- have followed all of that advice. I tried eliminating all getty's in my
- inittab and inserting a /bin/doshell /dev/tty1 /usr/X386/bin/sdm in my
- rc. xdm starts up fine, but will not let me login, not as root, not as
- a user, not as anyone. When I press ctrl-alt-backspace to abort X, it
- simply restarts xdm, at which point I'm pretty much screwed.
-
- This sounds very much like a problem I had with xdm. This was under
- 386BSD (I have tried both the free Unixes). I started it up, and yes
- it would get going and ask for an ID. Unfortunately whatever password
- I put in it didn't like it.
-
- It took me a while to realise that it had been compiled without the
- password encryption function in it, so that there weren't export
- problems to do with the US. I had turned password encryption on for
- my 386BSD (obviously, or I'd have people all over my system in no
- time).
-
- I don't know if this is what is causing you problems, but it sounded
- so similar that I had to ask. The Linux xdm that I've got has
- password encryption in, but there is no guaranteeing that we have the
- same version.
