- I am going to be getting a new system within the next month or so,
- and I want to use it to run linux. Just have a few questions for people
- out there.
-
- 1) How many people have had luck with using the ATI Ultra Pro. Has
- anyone gotten it to work with it's own server (not the X8514A server).
- 2) If not, what information would I need to have in order to attempt
- to write a driver for this card?
- 3) Is there special programming required to make use of a local bus
- card? Will a local bus IDE controller work at full capacity, or will the
- kernel just ask it for data in 16 bit chunks?
- 4) If I have 8 meg of memory - what is a good swap partition size?
- Would it be better to use a swap file so as not to waste the extra partition?
- I plan on running X alot - with 4-5 windows open at a time - how likely
- am I to need swap space? Is the speed benifit of a partition over a file
- great?
- 5) What is the best method of installing linux for the first time
- (opinions)?
- 6) Can linux handle two different HD controllers at once? What if
- they are of diff't types (one SCSI, one IDE)?
- 7) Can linux handle 2.88 meg 3.5 inch floppies?
- 8) I am looking at buying the gateway 2000 4-66V which has the
- following setup:
- 486-66DX2
- 8 Meg Ram
- 340 meg IDE drive
- Local Bus IDE controller
- Local Bus ATI Ultra Pro
- Both floppies
- usual stuff (KB, Mouse, etc)
- 15" flat screen monitor
-
- Has anyone out there used linux on this machine? Does it sound like
- a reaonable setup? I have about $3000 to spend - can anyone suggest
- a better setup?
-
- 9) What kind of EISA support is there out there. If I get an EISA
- machine, will it still work with the ISA code?
-
- 10) Linux is great!!! Thanks Linus!!
