- I am having problems getting the partition sizes I want
- in Linux 98.pl1. I was my understanding from the FAQ that
- linux would recognize large partitions. I can't seem to
- get it to see anything larger than 65536 blocks.
-
- What I want is to have a dos partition of 30M on a 200M
- disk. This would be a dos primary/bootable partition. The
- remaining 177M would be devoted to Linux. I further wanted
- to set up a primary Linux partition of 65 megs for the
- SLS system with the remaining 100M+ for user files.
-
- That is what I tried to set up. I made the 65M partition
- and reinstalled Linux on it. When I tried to make the
- 100M partition I keep getting errors from fdisk about the
- number of blocks must be less than 65536 if I make it
- a primary partition. If I make it extended, I can make it
- but can't mkfs it because I get an error saying that
- linux cannot currently use 103010 of the partition.
-
- What am I doing wrong? Is it a good plan to have a primary
- partition of 65M and the rest partitioned in one large
- piece. The FAQ quotes Chuck Hedrick as saying that he
- prefers smaller partitions. Could linux users share
- (1) their experiences with partition sizes and (2)
- tell me what I am doing wrong.
-
- BTW, I have X11 working with my Trident 8900c thanks to
- all of the kind users who shared their Xconfigs with me.
- I still cannot return to text mode although when I tested
- an et4000 card I could....so it must be the Trident chip.
- Is anyone acquainted with the hardware -- I ain't --
- looking into this problem?
-
- I appreciate all the support....I am not an absolute
- newbie but I am dangerous enough to wipe out all I have
- done if I am not careful.
