- Linux is targeted towards people who like to tinker with OS sources. It is
- still evolving, and patches are posted at frequent intervals. A lot of new
- features are appearing for Linux, and it is probably best to have FTP access
- if you want to keep up with the changes. Some of the most recent patches
- seem to have caused problems with some machines.
-
- Coherent is targeted towards people who want an inexpensive UNIX clone that
- is ready to go. It has binary compatibility with other SVR3.2 systems.
- Sockets and TCP/IP are being worked on, and X11 will come in time. There
- are less people working on Coherent than on Linux, but it is a centralized
- development environment that uses proper software QA practices.
-
- One thing to note here is that a lot of recent high speed, low cost 486
- systems seem to have various problems running multitasking operating
- systems. This will change as the clone industry shakes out.
