- Another disturbing thought has come to me.
-
- As databases grow, those who have them, in particular the government,
- will be able to run searches to list all people on whom there is not a wad
- of data in the various public databases.
-
- Throw in a few parameters to remove the people who are naturally in the
- low-data class, such as rural people, the homeless etc. and the result
- is a list of those who are actively watching what data they give out. Us.
-
- In other words by refusing to give your address all the time, by hiding your
- SSN, you will instead stick out like a sore thumb.
-
- Some agencies might then make such people objects of particular investigation.
- That could include both news agencies and government agencies.
-
- Which means that we must do more than just not give away our data. We
- must convince everybody else not to give away their data so that it is the
- norm.
-
- I'm normally pretty solidly on the anti-legislative side of the privacy
- protection spectrum, but this makes me wonder.
