- Depends what you mean by "telephones lines". If you mean the phone
- network that runs to residences today, then yes, you're quite right (the
- best you can attain on those right now is about 14.4 kb/s, with a
- modem). But there is a technology that is beginning to move out of the
- lab that can support T1 rates (1.544 Mb/s) to most residences over the
- existing copper plant. This technology is known as ADSL (Asymmetric
- Digital Subscriber Line). If MPEG I-encoded video is acceptable to
- people for entertainment video, then ADSL will support video-on-demand.
