  11. We are in a rural area and would like our electronic post office to
  12. work more like a friendly, rural post office should.

  14. The default handling of invalid local addresses (in the sendmail
  15. NX5.67c distributed by Next) is to bounce the incoming mail with an
  16. appropriate message and (with Op set) to send a headers-only copy
  17. to postmaster.

  19. Is there anything I can do _without_ starting from scratch with 
  20. sendmail source code (which I don't want to do because I'd either 
  21. have to hack in Next's netinfo aliases stuff or stop using netinfo 
  22. for aliases, and because it's another package to support locally in 
  23. limited time) that would let me change that behavior?

  25. At very least, I'd like the _whole_ message to go to postmaster, 
  26. since these addressing errors are usually rather obvious to fix 
  27. (people using firstname-lastname instead of firstname_lastname, 
  28. assuming the existence of aliases like "info", or making simple 
  29. spelling errors) and that will get the mail to the proper person 
  30. more reliably than counting on the remote sender to know what to do 
  31. himself.  Preferably, I'd like to do that, and send back a 
  32. customized bounce message, with only the headers, informing the 
  33. sender that his mail has been sent to postmaster to see if it can 
  34. be delivered despite the invalid local address.

  36. (I have thought about the security implications and they are 
  37. unimportant at our site.  Neither is the volume great.)
