  22. Two spaces after a sentence is a throwback to the typewriter days when
  23. everything was "monospaced" (ie. the width of each character is the same).
  24. Two spaces looks better with such fonts (note how these net messages are
  25. monospaced - at least on my machine).  Now if you type something in a
  26. word processor and use "proportional" fonts (ie. the width of each
  27. character depends on the character) you should never, repeat NEVER, use
  28. two spaces after the period in a sentence.  Any publisher (printer, etc.)
  29. will tell you this, and by the way my style manual (Webster's Standard
  30. American Style Manual) says: "In typewritten material, two spaces follow
  31. a period that ends a sentence. ... In typeset material, only one space
  32. follows this period."
