- If I were just starting out, and had no previous experience with any
- of these programs I would probably go with 3D Studio. It is the only one
- of these that is currently being developed at a reasonable pace. Topas
- is Crystal 3D with a more interactive face grafted on, and GSL (the
- former graphic software arm of AT&T) believes in tiny improvments at
- high prices. Digital Arts fired their tech support guy, and seems to
- want to dump the PC product in favor of a product for the Indigo.
-
- Autodesk seems likely to be the most likely to offer a student price,
- as they offer one on AutoCad.
-
- Ease of use: Topas is the easiest to learn, and you can learn it
- in a couple of weeks. Problem is, at the end of two weeks you will
- know everything it can do.
- 3D Studio is more powerful, and a bit harder to learn. It also
- has "hooks" for outside processes, so you will not have to depend
- on Autocad for innovation.
- Digital Arts is a absolute bitch to learn, dreadful manuals,
- but (IMHO) the most powerful of the three. I earn my living as a
- freelancer due to the difficulty of this program, so I have _very_
- mixed feelings.
