- - ... IF I
- - have a FAX-modem for my computer, I can either monitor for FAX or for modem
- - calls, but not for both. What I need, (and what a lot of you seem to want
- - also) amounts to the following:
- -
- - a box containing my FAX-Modem, and a ring detector that operates under
- - software control (so I can set up for phone systems with regional differences
- - like ring times, busy signals, etc.); on incoming calls, the monitor looks
- - for CNG tone, or modem "originate" tones--if it doesn't hear them, the phone
- - attached to the box rings, I answer, and talk to my caller. If it does hear
- - either of the tones, it selects which software to wake up, and passes the
- - call to that software for action.
- -
-
- The problem is "IF I have a FAX-modem for my computer"
- ^^^^^^
- I.E. because the standards took so long to develop (they are at last),
- you could only get FAXmodem - FAXsoftware combinations, no interchange.
-
- But on my Worldport FAX modem the software connects to either the FAX
- server or the "Bulletin Board System" if a data call comes in.
-
- Voice callers still get an ear full of dial-in tone, but you could make your
- modem answer after six rings (say) and train personal callers to ring
- off earlier.
-
- Unfortunately, that "BBS" is nothing to write home about :-(
