- Hello,
-
- I have a 2400 baud Zoom modem. No fax or anything, just
- a plain little unit that I've had for a few years. About six
- months ago, I needed to be able to send a break signal to log
- onto the computers at my school. After screwing around for a
- few months and calling Zoom tech support I found out that my
- modem wouldn't do this with the chip it currently had in it.
- So Zoom quickly sent me a new chip, free of charge. It
- works great, as far as sending a break signal. However, now
- the CD (carrier detect) light is ALWAYS on. Whenever I have
- to hang up, my comm program (Telix) reports the hang-up
- failed. And I can't put Telix in the host mode, it thinks
- someone is calling in and prompts for a login. When I needed
- the break signal, I just figured I'd put up with
- comparatively little things like that (at least little to me)
- but currently, I don't need to send a break signal because of
- the new setup my school is using. Should I:
-
- A) put the old chip back in?
-
- B) leave the new chip in?
-
- C) call Zoom again and get a chip that works? (I haven't
- done this yet because their lines are constantly busy and not
- all the tech people I talked to were very knowledgeable about
- my problem -- 2 of the 3 I talked to were helpful)
-
- The info on the new(er) chip:
- C1901-20
- (C)ROCKWELL 87
- 9151 A11641-2
-
- I don't have the old chip in front of me, but the main
- difference (that Zoom asked me about anyways) was that it was
- -16 instead of -20.
- Feel free to reply by email if appropriate.
-
- Thanks in advance,
-

- PS I guess I didn't make it clear, but when Telix reports that
- the hang-up failed, it actually works. At least so far.
